Over the last few decades, we’ve seen a dramatic rise in estrogen dominance in both women and men that can largely be attributed to xenoestrogens. If you think estrogen is just a “female issue,” think again. Excess estrogen is a growing problem for men and can lead to sexual dysfunction, infertility, and enlarged breasts.
Xenoestrogens are a group of endocrine-disrupting chemicals that mimic estrogen.
Xenoestrogens are found in EVERYTHING: cosmetics, cleaning products, tap water, and conventionally-raised foods. That “new car smell?” Xenoestrogens. Strong odor from a new shower curtain? Xenoestrogens. Paper receipt at the grocery store? Xenoestrogens.
They’re everywhere, yes. But that shouldn’t overwhelm us from doing our best to minimize. Three great places to start are water, skincare, and food storage.
🚫 WATER: Thanks to pollution and run-off of pesticides/fertilizers, our water is full of synthetic estrogens and prescription meds, chemicals from chemical plant runoff & plastics/chemicals from landfills.
✅ Solution: Get the best water filter that fits your budget. The gold standard is reverse osmosis water filter. There are some excellent reverse osmosis whole house filters and under-the-counter filters. Pristine Hydro is a great option if you are ready to make that investment. We have a countertop reverse osmosis from AquaTru. I love it. We have had the water independently tested and the water testing company we went through was blown away by how pure the water coming out of the AquaTru is.
Don’t forget to add minerals to your water. City filtration and reverse osmosis filters both remove necessary minerals from our water. I always add minerals back in. I use AquaTru minerals, but these are also good options:
🚫PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS: Many chemicals used in cosmetics, (parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates) are estrogenic. PMID: 16097138
US Beauty industry regulations are laughable. The products are regulated by the companies that produce them! Your skin is your largest organ and skincare ingredients are absorbed directly into your tissues. They never even have the chance to be detoxified through your liver! This is a BIG problem.
✅ Solution: Clean beauty. I love the Skin Deep guide from ewg.org to find toxin-free products.
🚫 FOOD STORAGE: All plastics (water bottles, food wrap, containers, etc.) contain hormone-mimicking xenoestrogens. These leach chemicals and xenoestrogens into our food. Even “BPA-free” plastics are not safe. PMID: 24886603
✅ Solution: Use glass, stainless steel, or silicone containers as much as possible. I love Yeti water bottles and stasher bags for easy, on-the-go food and drink options. At home, I use glass food storage containers. The lids are plastic but they don’t come in contact with the food so I feel okay about it.
Reducing exposure is super important! Next, we’re going to explore how to break down and eliminate estrogens more efficiently by giving your body the right support.
